Your Road Map to Entrepreneurial Success

If you’re like most entrepreneurs, you can probably recall the feeling of being completely overwhelmed with so much to do that you could never possibly finish it all. Just when you feel like you’re starting to make some headway, you learn of the newest tool or technique out there (websites, business cards, social media, CRM programs, the list goes on and on); you immediately want to jump on board so you don’t get left behind.
According to the Small Business Administration (SBA), “About half of all new establishments survive five years or more and [only] about one-third survive 10 years or more.” So, basically, that means approximately 70% of small businesses will eventually fail. In fact, many experts today believe that statistic is closer to 90% (or 9 out of 10).
Fuse Business Training has done extensive research on this topic and has found that there are commonalities among those businesses that decide to call it quits:
They lack the right skills, education, connections or resources to move them to the next level.
They are doing things at the wrong time and for the wrong reasons. In other words, someone told you that you needed to have a website for your business, so you built one all by yourself on a free “user-friendly” site, only to learn that those sites don’t get very good SEO. Therefore, if you want someone to find you without having your business card with the web address listed, you needed a new option. So, then you hired someone (probably thousands of dollars) to build it better for you – just the way you want! But then… you discover that your brand (or lack of one) that you’ve been using doesn’t portray the message you’d like it too, so you decide to fully rebrand your business, which means you’ll have to rebuild your website – again, along with buying more of all those marketing materials that you already bought and haven’t even used yet. All of this could have been avoided had you done business in the right order, the smart order. You need to define your brand BEFORE creating ANYTHING online or offline to market your business.
The sad truth is most people jump right into Marketing as soon as they begin a business, when in fact marketing comes much, much later (after about 15 other important categories).
